Business Solutions for Accounts Receivable and Debt Management

By Prateek Thaman

Businesses are always looking to find more efficient ways to keep track of the money coming in from sales of goods or services provided. Some payments are made instantly while other are on a schedule which could be anywhere from 30-150 days or any time frame which was agreed upon. Outstanding balances from clients for services already provided are known as accounts receivables.

Sometimes the customers refuse to pay or are unable to pay after the service has already been provided. In such cases, chasing down customers can take up way too much time which can in turn affect the quality of product a business provides. As a result, these accounts receivables are handed off to a debt collection agency. These agencies use their expertise to find solutions for any businesses collection needs.

As mentioned a collection agency is used to collect the outstanding balances owed to a business. These agencies are important because if accounts receivables are not received they can become debt for a business. Collection agencies work for a fee or commission of the total amount owed on the account receivable.

There are three types of collection agencies, 1st party, 3rd party and debt buyers. 1st party agency is the subsidiaries of the original company who go out and try to settle the accounts receivables that may become a problem. The 3rd party agency is a separate company that may collect accounts receivables for a business for a fee or a percentage of the amount owed. Finally there are debt buyers; they buy the problematic account receivables from a business for a percentage of the value.

Collection agencies start off by meeting with the accounts receivable department of a business to find out which accounts need to be reached out to. The agencies are required to follow specific rules and guidelines in order to ensure the safety of the clients. These include no threatening, no obscene language, or law person impersonations. Following these guidelines the agencies use their skills and experience to figure out the best way to reach out to the pending accounts receivables and settle the owed amount.
