By Eric Holm

Being prepared for a disaster involves a lot more than just purchasing emergency equipment and supplies and then forgetting all about them. Once you have assembled the various things you need to survive, those items must be properly organized and stored in a convenient location. Having a solar blanket and extra sleeping bags will do you no good on a bitterly cold night without power if you cannot put your hands on them when you need them. Organizing your survival gear will ensure that you have exactly what you need whenever you need it. Putting your hands on these items quickly can mean all the difference when disaster strikes. It is also important to put together a portable kit that may be taken with you if you are forced to leave your home. Emergency supplies storage is something that everyone should address.

A properly stocked disaster kit should contain all the things necessary to provide first aid or meet basic human needs in the wake of a traumatic experience. Getting familiar with the contents and knowing how to use everything included in the kit will help anyone react properly when confronted with a crisis. The proper way to handle emergency storage is to follow these simple steps to organize supplies.

To begin with, consider your trauma kits or the first aid kits as the primary item for your emergency storage. Make sure that when you purchase those they come with a container or backpack to hold all the necessary emergency supplies like bandages, creams, splints and other things together. If you purchase separate medical supplies make sure that the container is large enough to hold all the supplies and can easily be kept in an easy-to-find location. Backpacks and plastic cases are the best to be used for your first aid kit or trauma kit. Label all the supplies with their names so that there is no confusion while finding the same. Using a large and heavy duty rubber 55 gallon tote on wheels to store and move a large supply of emergency gear or to store all the backpacks in one place is another great idea. Equipments like first aid supplies, emergency shelter rations, sleeping linens should all be kept separately marked. - Organize yourself for an emergency disaster drill and practice locating the equipments kept in storage.
