Learn About Fixing Your Credit With These Tips

By Johnathan Black

If you are having problems with your credit there are steps you can take to improve it on your own for free. This is better than using a credit repair agency that may charge you. Use the tips in this article to get on your way to repairing your credit.

Nothing will repair your credit other than time. If you have late payments, defaults or even bankruptcy, your score will go down. There is no way to remove these once they have been reported. Only time and good behavior will eventually make them less and less of a determining factor in your score and the credit that you receive.

Make sure to make your payments on time when you subscribe to a phone service or a similar utility. Most phone companies ask you to pay a security deposit when you sign a contract with them. By making your payments on time, you can improve your credit score and get the deposit that you paid back.

A consumer statement on your credit file can have a positive impact on future creditors. When a dispute is not satisfactorily resolved, you have the ability to submit a statement to your history clarifying how this dispute was handled. These statements are 100 words or less and can improve your chances of obtaining credit when needed.

Repairing your credit can take some time, but you can hasten the process by prioritizing your debts, particularly those that are in arrears. High interest rate accounts should be paid off as quickly as possible to avoid wasting money on interest payments rather than reducing the actual balance of your debt. If you have one or two accounts with a low balance, consider paying them off in a lump sum. Once that's done, you can have them removed from your credit report.

If you are trying to repair your credit, don't allow a disputed bill to go to collections. Just because something shouldn't have been charged to you doesn't mean it can't go to collections and harm your credit score. Instead of refusing to pay the bill, pay it but include a notice that you are paying under protest and intend to take the matter to the small claims court.

If you want to repair your credit score, avoid actions that send up red flags with the credit agencies. These flags include using advances from one card to pay off another, making large numbers of requests for new credit, or opening too many accounts at the same time. Such suspicious activity will hurt your score.

Hopefully, by applying the tips mentioned above, you will be in a better position today, than you were yesterday! These things take time. Don't cringe - credit repair is well worth any effort on your part! Remember the benefits -- both short-term and long-term -- to repairing your credit!
