Factors To Consider When Shopping Athens OH Apartments

By Ruth Roberts

Shopping around for a new rental can be both challenging and fun. It is important to note that most property management companies will require you to lock into a six-month lease or a lease that lasts a full year. This is why it is vital to make sure that you're absolutely in love with a unit before committing. Following are several factors to consider as you shop your options in Athens OH apartments.

One very important thing to think about is how long it is going to take you to get to and from your place of business. If you have to spend too much time and guess to get from place to place, it can be hard justifying a move to a place, even if it has very low rents. You want to establish a convenient and comfortable lifestyle so that the greatest portion of your free time can be spend doing things that you actually enjoy, as opposed to moving through traffic.

Spend some time learning about the parking situation. A lot of apartments have covered parking stalls but some just have lots with numbered spaces out in the opened. Unless these spaces are assigned, you could have a hard time finding one when you need it. If you like having guests over a lot, see if there are lots of guest spaces that your visitors can take advantage of as well. This will prevent your friends and family from having to park out on the street.

You can use the web to collect information on area crime stats. If there is a very high crime rate in the area, having your unit be burglarized is probably a huge concern. It can be stressful just walking out to your car in the dark. Another thing to know is that you will usually need to pay significantly higher car and renters insurance premiums when the local crime rates are high.

If this is an apartment that you will be sharing with your kids, find out about the schools in the area. More families are becoming apartment dwellers given the increasingly high costs of real estate investing. There are a number of apartment communities that are surrounded by high-quality elementary, middle and high schools. If you do not do the necessary research, however, you might make the mistake of taking a lease in an area with low-quality, crime ridden schools.

See what amenities will be available to the general community and decide whether you will actually enjoy any of these things. Although using these features will not change your rental costs, buildings that have lots of amenities tend to charge higher rents than those that do not. If you like having onsite workout rooms and swimming pools, then this extra spending will be worthwhile.

Check to see if any rent specials are being offered. If you are qualified to get them, you can save some money when moving in. Specials like these are usually listed on property management websites.

Last, take a walk around the complex to see if the environment is ultimately a comfortable one. You might be reticent to surround yourself with noisy people who stay up late. If the community feels safe and quite, then it could be the very home that you've always been wanting.
