Characteristics of Queens Park

By Michael Samuel

Queens Park is located in North London. The region has numerous features including the park itself. The park is large in size and is well conserved for the public. It has a caf'e, sport amenities and a playground. This region is well-known because of the Queen's Park Rangers football club. The region also has the historic housing estate called Queen's Park Estate.

Artisans, The General Dwelling Company and labourers came together with a sole purpose of developing Queen's Park Estate on eighty acres piece of land, which was located in North of Harrow Road. In 1867, the Artisans Co was established with a goal of putting up modern house for the people working in the industry.

In 1884, the people contacted to build the Park started and by 1882, 1,571 houses were constructed, with further 499 houses under construction. The professionals contacted to build the park were faced with numerous problems but regardless of these problems Queen's Park was a major achievement and a major forerunner of the materialising of 'Garden City' group. The Park was also instrumental in upgrading of the public housing.

There are estates similar to the Queen's park estate that exist, these include, Wandsworth (Shaftesbury Estate), Lambeth (Leigham Court) and Haringey (Noel Park). These parks were altered in the period of World War II, as a result of ruins sustained in Fifth Avenue, Droop Street, Huxley Street and Kilburn Lane. Unfortunately in 1940, a land mine destroyed Peach Street totally. Later on the Street Scene was also altered as government captured the iron railings.

The first phase to be constructed was the Peach Street bomb site that was built in 1951. The second phase that followed was redevelopment and destruction of the marginal verandas on the Third Avenue and Droop Street as Mozart Estates and Avenue Gardens took place in 1970. Given that the available space was not enough to build a big recreation park Farrent Street was demolished to give room to a bigger park. Regardless of these demolitions the park remains an absolute model of early home estate expansion.

QPR also known as Queen Park ranges football, is a professional football club which is based in white City, London.
