Domain Registration: How It Works

By Alex Hottman

In this age of the internet, many businesses are going live on the world wide web, and more and more people are realizing just how much potential for income there is in cyberspace. If you are looking to establish an online presence for your business, setting up a website for it is necessary. But in order to get a place for your website on the internet, you first need to register domain name.

Having a domain name is important because it primarily serves as the identity of your website and this is what users will type on the address bar of internet browsers to check it out. Domain names have a wide variety of extensions such as .com, .net, .info, and .org. It is important that you have your domain carefully figured out and must be meaningful or relevant to the theme of your website.

In choosing a domain name, you can either use keywords that are relevant to your niche or one that describes your brand name. For example, if you're involved in selling mobile phones, then it should be something like mobilephones.com. Well known brand names such as Starbucks would have their domain name as starbucks.com. Whichever you choose, make sure you avoid trademarked or copyrighted names.

You will have to do business with a domain registrar if you want to register domain name the right way. Domain registrars handle all the registration activities and they allow your site to be existent on the internet. When choosing a domain registrar, a good feature to look for is their accreditation with an organization known as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Before you register domain name with a particular registrar, you should review carefully the terms of their contract. Each will have terms that could potentially be beneficial or risky for your website. Domain registrars will usually offer a variety of packages that can cover everything you will need to get your site up. Also, make sure that your registrar provides timely notifications once your registration is about to expire.

You can expect to receive quality registration services from well-known domain registrars, and these services come at a price. And while there are also those that offer their services for free, are you going to risk your business with them? Remember that you always get what you pay for. A $10 per year registration is not bad at all and there are many registrars that offer their services at that rate.

It may be possible that your chosen domain name has already been previously registered - if so, don't be discouraged. Just try to use your creativity to come up with unique set of relevant keywords. Also, make it a point that you register domain name under the .com extension because it will lend your site a good level of authority. In the registration process, you will be asked to provide some personal information.

When you register domain name with a particular company, it is recommended that you host your website a separate company. Hosting is important because it is where the actual contents of your site are located. Experts recommend having separate accounts as a way to spread out your risk just in case something goes wrong with either your domain registration or hosting provider.
