A Look At The Various Uses For Emergency Lighting And Supplies

By Eric Holm

Emergency lighting is as important as food and sanitation in times of disaster and other unpredictable emergency circumstances. Just imagine how hard it is to locate mountain climbers who fall through traps or slip down deep ravines if they do not have a shake flashlight or emergency light or light wand. Do you think people who live in high-rise apartments will be able to properly evacuate in case of fire or disaster if their building's stairwells do not have proper emergency lighting? Indeed, people take the importance of light or electricity for granted. They only realize its significance when they are in a dark situation.

Devices like these are no good if stored in places that are hard to get to or if they do not stay charged on a regular basis. Having multiple flashlights within a home is a moot point if stored in areas such as a garage, attic or basement and cannot be located quickly and decisively. In worst case scenarios the location of the lights are completely unknown.

So, aside from making sure that everyone in your family has their own handy flashlight, you also need to make sure that these lighting gadgets are located or kept in places that are accessible to every member of your household, including your five-year-old kid. Moreover, your housekeeper or babysitter should also know where emergency supplies, including flashlights, lanterns and rechargeable lamps, can be found even if you are just going away for a few hours.

One item that is very important when designing a safety plan is having back up batteries for when the working ones run out of juice. Without extra power the lights will not work and there will be no reason for having them in the first place. Again checking the lights on a scheduled basis to ensure they are working properly will prevent problems from occurring should a power outage occur. Another idea is to keep shack lights and crank lights handy as they do not require conventional batteries and can be recharged with a shake or a crank of the unit.

Traveling outdoors in the woods or mountains a person should always carry plenty of emergency supplies. Some of these include additional blankets, food, an emergency light and radio along with other items in case of an accident. The emergency radio and light units are great because a person can purchase one that is a crank design and with a few turns they can have information updates along with a light source that will come in very handy. By having the right safety equipment a family or individual will be prepared for anything.
